“You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubts; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair. For those to whom much is given, much is required. It is not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.” Gen. Douglas MacArthur
Gen. MacArthur’s quote struck a nerve for me. I reflected on some key lessons for both life and career development that have been essential in my journey:
1. Cultivate Faith and Confidence: Faith in God brings assurance. Believing in yourself and your abilities brings a youthful energy in your career. Doubts and fears will make you feel stuck and old. Focus on nurturing your self-confidence and faith as you journey on.
2. Harness Hope: Maintaining hope and a positive outlook helps us stay motivated and innovative. Life will always have unpleasant surprises, but harnessing hope reminds us; this too shall pass. Despair can be paralyzing and may diminish your creative potential. BUT stay hopeful and look forward to future opportunities. In every challenge lies opportunity. I know hope is not a strategy but it sure fuels motivation.
3. Responsibility and Accountability: Acknowledge the responsibility that comes with each role God has allowed / allows you to have, while you have it. Lead by example, mentor others and make impactful decisions. Work hard and with excellence. Think ahead. Follow through.
4. Resilience: Life will happen! Setbacks are inevitable, but what truly matters is the response. The ability to rise after being knocked down. Choose to control only what you can. Developing resilience and a growth mindset helps us learn from failures and bounce back stronger. It also changes our look on things in rough times.
Keep faith and hope alive. There is no night too long that the sun won’t rise. Embrace challenges. Own your career. Take responsibility for your growth. Keep pushing forward, you’ll find success on your path! Never forget you play a big role in defining your own success, your way!
