Life has a way of presenting us with unexpected defining moments. I like to say – ‘life will happen with or without our permission’. Over a year ago, life abruptly changed for me -forcing me to break my very sweet comfortable routine. suddenly, there was no familiar commute. No scheduled meetings. All I had was an uneasy abundance of reflection time and unanticipated crossroads I couldn’t avoid.

The stillness of those early days is still loud. It felt like standing at a dead end, after a full day’s drive. The question sitting in the silence was one I couldn’t outrun: what’s the next step? Defining moments, demand a choice!!

‘When a defining moment comes along, you can do one of two things. Define the moment, or let the moment define you. It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.’

That statement landed differently now that I was living it. Defining moments aren’t theoretical. They show up in the form of a phone call, a closed door, a season that forces you to stop and reckon with what you’ve been avoiding.

The Choice Inside the Moment

Every defining moment carries a demand. You can let circumstances dictate your path, or you can seize the opportunity to redefine your journey. I realized this wasn’t an ending, but an invitation to reassess what truly matters in my professional life. I chose to see it as an opportunity to rise. ‘Opportunity is the blessing that allows a man to use hidden potential.’

With the initial disruption shock worn off, I made a bold choice. I will not return to the familiar — though that was the easier path. I paused long enough to ask the questions I had been too busy to ask before:

• Who do I want to become?
• What impact do I want to make?
• What skills do I want to develop?
• What would the future-me thank the present-me for doing?

Never shy away from the hard questions. They force you to clarify the unknown.

Leaning Into What You Already Have

I leaned into three things I was certain, were true about myself: a love for deep thinking, a genuine hunger for learning, and an instinct to maximize what I have on hand -improvise to push for the highest potential. Like essential ingredients in a master recipe, these elements combined to fuel my drive forward.

When pushed into a corner, there is hardly any room for self-doubt. Constraint, I discovered, is clarifying. I channeled my passion for unlocking potential into something tangible; the path forward became clear.

It was time to fast-track a vision I had originally planned for five years ahead. That vision? My own career coaching practice. Opportunity responds to one who lives life with a vision of their future in mind. It underscores having the end-in-mind for your career vision.

It takes courage and a will to try. Take the first steps to what you envision of, and for yourself. I am now doing the work that blends personality, passion and purpose – guiding others through career transitions that align with their long-term vision. It all started with an unexpected push that forced me to leap. Life happened – forcing a future plan forward.

This Is for You

If you are facing a career defining moment right now — a layoff, a transition, a season of uncertainty — take heart. It is not just about what is happening to you. It is about your next choices.

I prefer phrasing it as: ‘there is more of you to explore’. You have more potential than you know. That ‘abrupt’ moment when you are called into the HR office, get the phone call, email – is not the end of the story. It’s an invitation to write the next chapter on your own terms.

Embrace it. Define the moment.
